(Washington, Feb 16) Data from U.S. mortgage finance agency Freddie Mac shows that the average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage fell to 6.06% last week, down from 6.16% the previous week—marking the lowest level since September 2022.

The decline suggests borrowing costs are continuing to ease, which is widely expected to support housing market activity by encouraging more buying and refinancing.

Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater noted that lower rates have had an immediate positive effect on market participation, with both weekly home purchase applications and refinancing activity rising sharply. He added that the U.S. housing market could be heading into a strong spring selling season.
