China’s Homegrown “Flying Sedan” Takes Off: World’s First 6-Ton Tiltrotor Makes Maiden Flight with a 4,000-km Range

Fast Technology (Dec 28) reported that United Aircraft Group has successfully completed the maiden flight of the Lanying R6000, billed as the world’s first 6-ton-class tiltrotor aircraft, in Sichuan, China—a milestone signaling a major breakthrough in domestic tiltrotor technology. Tencent News+1
The Lanying R6000 is designed to combine the best of both worlds: helicopter-style vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and fixed-wing-style high-speed cruise. In helicopter mode, the rotors point upward, enabling runway-free takeoff, hovering, and vertical landing—ideal for tight or rugged environments. CGTN News+1
Once transitioning to cruise, the rotors tilt forward by 90 degrees into a horizontal position, effectively turning the aircraft into a propeller-driven fixed-wing platform that relies on wing lift for efficient long-range flight. Yahoo Finance+1
In terms of mission flexibility, the aircraft features a 7.6 m³ cargo bay with a modular interior that can switch between freight configuration and removable seating for passenger transport. UAT Air
For logistics, the cargo layout is built to cover a wide range of high-value delivery needs, with a maximum payload of 2,000 kg. For passenger use, it can reportedly carry around 4–10 people in a single trip—earning it the nickname “air sedan.” Tencent News+1
Performance is where the tiltrotor architecture really shines. In fixed-wing flight mode, the Lanying R6000 reaches a cruise speed of about 550 km/h, with a maximum range exceeding 4,000 km and a service ceiling around 7,620 m—figures that significantly surpass what traditional helicopters typically deliver in speed and range. Tencent News+1
With these capabilities, the platform is positioned for a wide set of scenarios, including air logistics, special operations, emergency rescue, offshore platform commuting, aerial surveying and mapping, premium private travel, and sightseeing tourism. UAT Air+1
On the propulsion side, the report notes the aircraft is paired with the AES100—described as China’s first fully indigenous 1,000 kW-class civil turboshaft engine. It features advanced compressor and turbine aerodynamic design, supports high-altitude anti-icing, and is built to handle complex electromagnetic environments, with claims including ~20% fuel savings and a 3,000-hour time-to-first-overhaul.
