(San Bruno, Feb 16) Short-form videos have long been criticized by parents and experts for their addictive design and the risk of overuse among young people. In response, YouTube has announced a major update focused on three areas: limits on Shorts viewing, changes to recommendation systems, and expanded parental supervision tools—aimed at improving online safety for teens.
Going forward, parents will be able to set time limits on how long teens can continuously scroll through Shorts, including the option to set the timer to zero to help young users manage viewing more intentionally. Parents can also configure customized bedtime reminders and “take a break” prompts. Automated versions of these reminders are now enabled by default for users under 18.
YouTube also said it will introduce a new registration and switching flow to make it easier to manage supervised accounts on shared devices such as phones and tablets. In addition, the platform plans to adjust recommendations for teen users so the system prioritizes higher-quality content that is more beneficial and age-appropriate.
Child account controls under scrutiny
Separately, CNN reported that Google, YouTube’s parent company, has come under renewed attention over child account supervision. Melissa McKay, a child online safety advocate and head of a non-profit institute, said in a LinkedIn post that Google notified her that her son—who is approaching age 13—would soon be eligible to request removal of parental supervision.
In response, Google security executive Kate Charlet said the company has updated its policy: teens turning 13 must obtain parental consent before supervision can be removed, until both sides are ready.
