A Surprise Outcome: Three Domestic Signings Feature in SIPG Friendly, but Only One Truly Impresses

Shanghai Port (SIPG) have kicked off their winter training with a clear objective for the new season: competing for titles in both the Chinese Super League and the FA Cup. To strengthen the squad, the club signed several domestic players, with Yue Xin, Zhang Yuan, and Lu Yongtao all joining the team during the offseason and taking part in recent friendly matches under head coach Kevin Muscat.

In terms of squad roles, Yue Xin is expected to serve mainly as a backup at left back. The starting position on that flank remains firmly held by Li Shuai, who has consistently delivered strong performances since joining the club. Whenever SIPG struggle down the left side, Li Shuai often steps up with decisive contributions, making him an undisputed starter and a trusted figure in Muscat’s system. Despite his contract expiring last season, a renewal appears all but certain.

Zhang Yuan, on the other hand, arrived from Beijing Guoan after experiencing a developmental plateau. While he did manage a memorable goal in the AFC secondary competition, his overall impact fell short of expectations. Seeking a fresh start, Zhang opted to join SIPG in hopes of reviving his form in a new environment.

Lu Yongtao’s transfer was arguably the biggest surprise. Few fans or media outlets anticipated his arrival before it was announced. Positioned as a rotational option at center forward, Lu fills a gap left by Li Shenglong, who has struggled for form in recent seasons and has since been assigned to the club’s second team for China League Two action.

In the latest friendly matches, all three domestic signings were given playing time. However, only one truly stood out. Defensive midfielder Zhang Yuan delivered a solid performance, showcasing composure, defensive awareness, and effective distribution in midfield. His display clearly impressed the coaching staff. Yue Xin and Lu Yongtao, meanwhile, still appear to need more time to adapt to the team’s tactical framework.

As winter training continues, the true value of SIPG’s new signings will become clearer. For now, Zhang Yuan has taken an early lead in the competition for a regular role.
