Volkswagen Brings GTI into the Electric Era! ID.Polo to Debut at Munich Motor Show, with ID.Passat on the Horizon

Volkswagen is ushering in a bold new chapter for its electric future — starting with the next model launch, the brand will retire its purely numerical naming convention for the ID. series, bringing back legendary names from its iconic combustion models.
The production version of the upcoming ID.2 will be christened ID.Polo, while the current ID.3 will adopt the name ID.Golf. Likewise, the ID.4 and ID.7 are expected to transform into ID.Tiguan and ID.Passat, with the possibility of an ID.Santana making a nostalgic return down the line.
“Names like Polo and Golf are deeply ingrained in the hearts of our customers. They represent quality, accessible technology, and heritage. We want to carry these values into the electric era,” explained Volkswagen’s CEO.
Compared to designations like ID.2 or ID.3, names such as ID.Polo and ID.Golf instantly convey the vehicle’s position in the lineup, making them far more relatable.
ID.Polo: A Star Attraction at Munich
The all-new ID.Polo will make its world premiere next week at the Munich Motor Show. Built on Volkswagen’s brand-new MEB Entry platform, it joins the “urban electric family” alongside models like the ID.Cross, Škoda Eqiq, and Cupra Raval. The range-topping ID.Polo GTI — with an impressive 223 hp — will mark the first time the iconic GTI badge graces an electric vehicle.
Dimensionally, the ID.Polo measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, 1,530 mm in height, and rides on a 2,600 mm wheelbase — slightly larger than today’s petrol-powered Polo, yet more compact than the ID.3.
Its exterior draws clear inspiration from the classic Polo silhouette, enhanced by sharp, elongated headlights, a full-width daytime running light, and an illuminated Volkswagen badge. The front grille’s upward-angled accents add a dynamic edge, while the profile retains VW’s timeless two-box hatchback form. At the rear, a light bar spans the tailgate, with the GTI variant receiving sportier bumpers and trim.
Performance & Technology
Buyers will be able to choose between 38 kWh and 56 kWh battery options, with fast charging up to 125 kW. The larger pack is expected to deliver around 450 km of range (WLTP). Inside, the cabin will feature a 12.9-inch central touchscreen, a 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster, and — in a welcome nod to usability — physical buttons for climate and audio controls.
According to Volkswagen’s roadmap, the ID.Polo will officially launch in May 2026, with the ID.Polo GTI following later that year.
From ID.Concept to Today
It’s been nearly a decade since Volkswagen unveiled its ID.Concept and MEB platform in 2016, the same year Tesla launched the Model 3. Since then, the ID. family has expanded to include the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, ID.7, ID.Buzz, and more.
In China’s early NEV (new energy vehicle) boom, Volkswagen’s ID. lineup became the best-selling among joint ventures, with the ID.3 standing out for its design, handling, and value. However, as domestic EV startups surged and geopolitical factors weighed in, VW’s competitive edge faded in China, with some consumers dismissing ID. models as “just another EV.” Overseas sales grew, but profitability suffered.
The Profitability Challenge
In Q1 2025, Volkswagen delivered 2.13 million vehicles globally, with BEV sales surging 113% in Europe and 51% in North America. Yet, operating profit fell from €4.6 billion to €2.9 billion, and margins dropped from 6% to 3.7%. Net profit plunged by over 40%.
VW admits the surge in EV sales came at the expense of profitability — margins on electric models remain significantly lower than those of internal combustion vehicles.
A Dual-Front Transformation
To counter this, Volkswagen is accelerating change.
- Globally, VW is investing heavily in a joint venture with Rivian to develop a new electronic architecture, aiming to speed up product cycles.
- In China, VW unveiled three concept cars in one go — the SAIC Volkswagen ID.ERA (a range-extended SUV with 1,000+ km range), Volkswagen Anhui ID.EVO (an 800V pure electric SUV), and FAW-Volkswagen ID.AURA (a compact EV sedan tailored for China).
The company is also deepening its local footprint, investing €2.4 billion in CARIZON, a joint venture between VW’s CARIAD and chipmaker Horizon Robotics, led by a Chinese CEO. Additionally, Volkswagen is collaborating with XPeng to co-develop the CEA electronic architecture, with the first jointly-developed model set for a 2026 launch.
Heritage Meets the Future
For decades, Volkswagen has been more than just a carmaker in China — it’s been a trusted partner shaping generations’ first impressions of the automobile. Now, on the fast-changing electric track, VW hopes names like ID.Polo, ID.Golf, and ID.Passat will not only evoke nostalgia but also reignite brand value and consumer confidence.
The question remains: in the next decade, can the ID.Passat recapture the glory days of its combustion-era predecessor?
