On January 19, the NBA released injury updates that caught fans’ attention: Jalen Williams of the Thunder will miss an indefinite period due to a right hamstring injury, while Darius Garland of the Cavaliers suffered a Grade 1 sprain to his right big toe and is expected to be sidelined for at least 7-10 days. Earlier, the Clippers confirmed Kawhi Leonard is out due to left knee contusion and inflammation, returning to Los Angeles for treatment and missing at least two away games.
Jalen Williams – Right Hamstring Injury
Williams sustained the injury during the Thunder’s loss to the Heat. Though he managed to walk off the court, he was clearly in pain. The Thunder announced Williams is on indefinite leave, with recovery time unspecified, and he is expected to miss several weeks.
This season, Williams has played 24 games, averaging 29.6 minutes, 16.8 points, 5.6 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game, with shooting percentages of 47.0%, 30.0%, and 83.3%. Last season, he had a breakout year: first-time All-Star, selected to the All-NBA Third Team and All-Defensive Second Team, and a key contributor to the Thunder’s 2025 NBA Championship. If Williams remains out, young star Chet Holmgren is expected to take on a larger scoring role.
Darius Garland – Right Big Toe Grade 1 Sprain
The Cavaliers confirmed Garland sustained a Grade 1 sprain to his right big toe during the third quarter of a road win against the 76ers. He has begun targeted treatment and rehabilitation and will be re-evaluated in 7-10 days.
For 25-year-old Garland, this is another setback following surgery on his left big toe, which caused him to miss significant games earlier this season. However, Garland’s form has rebounded in the past month, averaging 20.1 points and 7.4 assists over 14 games, with shooting percentages significantly improved. He is expected to miss at least four more games, giving other Cavaliers players increased court time.
