Recently, many EV owners have complained that even minor component failures require replacing entire assemblies—what used to be a few dollars for a bulb now costs thousands. Problems that were trivial in combustion vehicles have become expensive, time-consuming tasks in EVs.

Some suspect carmakers are deliberately designing hard-to-repair cars to make money. The truth is more nuanced.

Security and Anti-Theft as Original Intent
In the 1990s, easy-to-replace vehicle parts triggered theft waves in the U.S. and Europe. Luxury vehicles began using part-to-vehicle binding (VIN verification): audio systems, ECU modules, and seat memory modules must match the vehicle, or features are downgraded. VIN verification evolved into UDS protocols, X.509 certificates, and SecOC encryption, restricting aftermarket part circulation.

In EVs, this logic persists. Key systems—power, brakes, ignition—are electronically controlled, and third-party components with vulnerabilities can lead to data leaks or even remote hijacking. Nissan Leaf once experienced remote control exploits via insecure app interfaces.

Engineering Constraints Behind Hard-to-Repair Designs
EVs feature complex circuits requiring AEC-Q automotive-grade standards. Modules like OBC, DC/DC converters, and LED assemblies are potting-sealed, non-serviceable individually. Space constraints force compact integration, further complicating repairs.

Regulatory Push for Serviceability
European “End-of-Life Vehicles” regulations require easier-to-dismantle parts. Brands like Mercedes and BMW now use screws instead of potting and design removable modules for maintenance and recycling. In the U.S., Massachusetts and Oregon enacted “Right to Repair” laws, mandating certified parts availability for consumers and independent repair shops and prohibiting parts that only work when paired with the original vehicle.

China is following suit. In July 2025, the Ministry of Transport released the Technical Requirements for EV After-Sales Maintenance, requiring multi-channel access to parts, repair instructions, and enhanced third-party training, especially for high-voltage systems.
