(Nuuk, Jan 19) Greenland’s Dog Sledding Association said on Monday that an invitation extended to a newly appointed U.S. envoy to Greenland to attend the island’s annual dog-sled race has been withdrawn. The decision comes amid heightened sensitivities after Washington repeatedly voiced threats to take control of the Danish autonomous territory.

Reports said Jeff Landry, the Louisiana governor named as the U.S. envoy to Greenland, had been invited by a private Greenlandic travel company to attend the event. The association had earlier criticized the invitation as “completely inappropriate” given the political context.

In a social media post published late Sunday into early Monday, the association said it had learned that the company had unilaterally rescinded the invitation, adding that the move was “a relief.”

The association also recalled a similar episode last year, when Usha Vance, the wife of U.S. Vice President Vance, had planned to watch the same race during an uninvited trip to Greenland. After strong objections from Denmark, the plan was scrapped and replaced by a visit with Vice President Vance and a delegation to the U.S. Pituffik military base in northwestern Greenland.
