Mixed earnings send Netflix shares plunging

(New York, Jan 21) U.S. streaming giant Netflix reported a 29.4% year-on-year surge in net profit for the fourth quarter to US$2.42 billion (about RM9.8 billion), with earnings per share (EPS) rising to US$0.56 from US$0.43 a year earlier. However, revenue came in at US$12.05 billion (about RM8.8628 billion), up 18% year-on-year but slightly below analysts’ expectations of US$12.17 billion.
Netflix also posted free cash flow of US$1.87 billion (about RM7.5829 billion) for the quarter, beating the market forecast of US$1.46 billion. Global paid memberships climbed to 325 million, marking a new milestone since the company resumed disclosing subscriber data a year ago.
Looking ahead, Netflix expects full-year revenue to range between US$50.7 billion and US$51.7 billion, with the midpoint above analysts’ estimate of US$50.96 billion. For the first quarter, Netflix guided revenue at US$12.16 billion (about RM49.3149 billion), slightly below the consensus of US$12.17 billion, while profit is projected at US$3.91 billion (about RM15.8570 billion), also under the market expectation of US$4.18 billion.
In after-hours trading in the U.S. on Tuesday (Jan 20), Netflix shares fell as much as 5%.
