Inter Milan’s “Eastern Europe Plan” Continues: 17-Year-Old Croatian Defender Joins, Following Šutjić Model

Under the ongoing scrutiny of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations and a declining economic environment in Serie A, Inter Milan has quietly shifted its transfer strategy from a “superstar approach” to a focus on “sustainable development.” While European giants fight over high-priced stars, Inter’s management, led by Marotta and Ausilio, has turned toward nurturing young talents and developing future prospects to steadily strengthen the squad.

This winter window, Inter acted efficiently, securing Croatian defensive talent Leon Jakirović for a total investment of under €10 million. The 17-year-old center-back (some reports say 18) has long been tracked by the club’s scouting network. On January 19, renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano announced with his signature “Here we go” that Inter had reached an agreement with Dinamo Zagreb, perfectly reflecting the club’s philosophy of “getting big results with smart spending.”

The transfer involves a €2.5 million fixed fee, plus €2 million in potential bonuses and a share of any future resale. Leveraging their relationship with the player’s agency—also representing Šutjić—Inter outmaneuvered competitors including Red Bull Salzburg. This mirrors the strategy used to sign Šutjić in the summer of 2024, highlighting Inter’s skill in navigating key networks.

Jakirović is set to initially join Inter’s U23 squad, paving the way for a future first-team promotion. Meanwhile, the transfer of target player Ramčić has encountered difficulties, and despite the club’s efforts, his signing may not materialize.
