Brazilian midfielder Oscar, 34, diagnosed with a heart condition, had intended to retire, but now faces complications as his salary dispute with São Paulo remains unresolved.

In November 2025, Oscar suddenly collapsed during a medical check at São Paulo and was rushed to the ICU. Doctors diagnosed him with vasovagal syncope and advised him to retire from professional football. However, negotiations over his contract termination have dragged on for nearly two months.

Oscar returned to São Paulo in January 2025 on a contract running until December 2027. Brazilian media report that São Paulo owes him around 9.1 million RMB for the past year. Oscar hopes to receive the overdue salary before giving up the remaining two years, but the club disputes the amount, causing a deadlock. The disagreement involves image rights and signing bonuses, and São Paulo has launched an internal audit to verify the debt.

Notably, from 2017 to 2024, Oscar spent eight years at Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League, earning nearly 1.6 billion RMB without ever facing a salary issue. Given the current dispute, some may wonder if he regrets leaving the CSL.
