The 2025 smartphone sales puzzle: Is Huawei really No.1—or actually No.5?

After Omdia, IDC, and Counterpoint released their 2025 China smartphone data, a contradiction quickly surfaced.
All three firms ranked Huawei No.1 by shipments.
Yet an activation-based ranking shared by a tech blogger showed Huawei in fifth place—behind vivo, Xiaomi, Apple, and OPPO. The discussion intensified after Lu Weibing reposted the chart.
The key lies in measurement differences.
Market firms track shipments (sell-in)—phones delivered to distributors.
Activation data reflects sell-out, meaning devices actually purchased and activated by users.
Huawei’s shipments exceed activations, suggesting inventory still sitting in channels, especially mid-to-low-end models.
Xiaomi, however, shows higher activations than shipments due to its online-first, shorter distribution chain, allowing faster conversion from delivery to user activation.
This is not a contradiction, but a result of different sales structures.
Strategically, Lu Weibing’s repost signals Xiaomi’s ambition to strengthen its real user footprint as it pushes further into the high-end market—where Huawei and Apple remain dominant.
