On January 27, U23 China national team forward Xiang Yuwang spoke to the media about his admiration for his idol Cristiano Ronaldo and his experience at the U23 Asian Cup.
In the semifinal, Xiang scored a goal and celebrated with Ronaldo’s iconic gesture to pay tribute to his idol. Regarding Ronaldo’s influence on his career, Xiang said: “The first football star I really followed as a kid was Ronaldo. I thought he was tall and handsome, which instantly drew me to him. Later, as a professional player, what impressed me most was his character—his confidence and big heart. Every time the team faces a tough moment, he stands up. I hope to become a player who can help my team in the same way.”
Recalling his goal, Xiang said: “The goal matched my technical strengths, and I was very happy. What I’m most satisfied with is that it helped the team increase the score, secure the win, and advance to the next stage. That made me extremely glad.”
Regarding preparations for the final against Japan, Xiang shared: “For each opponent, including group matches, semifinals, and finals, the coaching staff designs different strategies and selects players according to strengths. The one constant is that we always treat ourselves as underdogs, fighting fully for the jersey we wear, for China—not just giving 100%, sometimes 200% effort. Facing Japan, no one needs to be motivated; we are extremely excited and eagerly anticipate the matchup.”
