(Hong Kong, Jan 28) The long-awaited time-travel epic A Step Into the Past is led by Louis Koo, who serves as both executive producer and male lead. The film reunites much of the original TV cast—including Raymond Lam, Jessica Hsuan, Sonija Kwok, and Joyce Tang—while also introducing new characters played by Michael Miu, Bai Baihe, Zhu Jianran, and Sammy Hung. Reports suggest the movie has delivered record-setting box office results. In a recent interview, Koo also brought up another project often described by fans as a “final urban legend”: Who Stole the Buddha?, sparking renewed curiosity about whether it will ever be released.
According to HK01, Koo appeared on the online program SpotiTalk, where he discussed production details of A Step Into the Past and, more notably, mentioned Who Stole the Buddha?—directed by Wilson Yip and starring Koo. The film released a teaser in 2023 but has yet to announce an official release date, turning it into a frequent topic among moviegoers. Many see it as a major reunion between Koo and Yip following their collaboration after Paradox (SPL III).
Addressing the delay, Koo said a profitable release requires careful coordination of release windows in both Mainland China and Hong Kong, along with marketing schedules and promotional logistics—factors beyond a single person’s control. He noted that while people keep asking how long it will be postponed, the decision depends on multiple parties and timing considerations.
Although Koo did not confirm when the film might hit theaters, he revealed that he and Yip had repeatedly discussed the ending. Koo said the original script ending was striking, but when he watched the first cut, he noticed changes. He explained that Yip had concerns about the ending feeling overly sentimental, while Koo encouraged him to keep the bolder, more innovative approach, calling it a fresh creative challenge.
As for whether the film will remain an “urban legend,” Koo maintained his usual stance, saying it still depends on the right release schedule.
