Tatum Considering Season-Long Absence, Final Decision Not Yet Made

As of January 29, the Celtics, originally expected to tank this season, have surged into the top three in the Eastern Conference under Brown. Earlier reports suggested Tatum might return early, but according to journalist Chris Haynes, Tatum, recovering from an Achilles injury, will reassess his condition and may miss the entire season. A final decision has not yet been made.

Tatum suffered a torn Achilles in Game 4 of last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals, ending his season early. The 2025-26 season was also expected to be a full-year recovery. However, multiple reports indicated rapid progress, with some suggesting he could return in March for the regular-season finale and playoffs.

The Celtics had traded away Holiday, Porzingis, and others in the offseason, preparing for a rebuild. After a slow start at the bottom of the Eastern standings, Brown’s leadership has pushed the team into third place, keeping playoff hopes alive.

Tatum will now reassess his health and consider sitting out the season. If he opts not to return, the Celtics’ playoff path will be significantly more challenging. Still, prioritizing complete recovery before returning is a prudent decision for his long-term career.
