Before the Spring Festival season, the Chinese film market remains sluggish, with few new releases making an impact. While some mid-budget films show mild promise, many star-driven projects have failed both critically and commercially.

Against this backdrop, classic films have returned to theaters—most notably Stephen Chow’s Royal Tramp 2. Once expected to benefit from nostalgia, the re-release instead faced widespread criticism, with audiences calling it repetitive and outdated.

This is not the first time Chow’s films have been re-released. While A Chinese Odyssey once succeeded due to restoration and added content, later re-releases such as The God of Cookery and Royal Tramp struggled at the box office, highlighting the declining power of nostalgia.

Since moving behind the camera, Chow’s newer works have often relied on past IPs rather than fresh ideas, resulting in mixed reception. As audience tastes evolve, nostalgia alone is no longer enough.

Stephen Chow remains a legend, but his era of box-office dominance may have passed. Today’s viewers are more willing to support strong new films than revisit classics they already know by heart.
