Google Confirms Background Playback on YouTube Remains Exclusive to Premium Subscribers

Google has confirmed that YouTube has updated its service rules to make background playback a YouTube Premium–exclusive feature, according to a January 30 report from Android Authority.

A Google spokesperson explained that background playback has always been intended as a Premium benefit. Previously, some non-Premium users could still access it in certain situations through mobile web browsers. Google says it has now adjusted that experience to ensure consistent behavior across all platforms.

Before this change, a YouTube Premium subscription not only removed ads, but also included a range of additional features. Some users had been able to bypass parts of the paywall by using non-Chrome browsers or pairing their browsers with ad-blocking tools—though these workarounds have reportedly been blocked on a broad scale recently.

With the updated rules, background playback is now limited to YouTube Premium members. The feature allows audio to continue playing while the browser is minimized or after the phone screen is turned off, making it especially useful for listening to long-form videos, music, or podcasts.

User reports suggest the restriction is already in effect across multiple browsers. Several Samsung Internet users have noted that non-Premium accounts can no longer keep audio playing once the browser is minimized or the screen is locked. Similar feedback has also been shared by users on Brave, Vivaldi, and Microsoft Edge.

According to these accounts, audio now stops immediately when the app is sent to the background or the display turns off. Some users also mention briefly seeing a notification labeled “MediaOngoingActivity,” after which the media controls disappear.
