A collar that can “understand dog language” has just secured RMB 50 million in funding.
In January, Traini announced the completion of a new funding round exceeding USD 7.5 million (approximately RMB 52.2 million). Founded in 2022, this self-described “pet emotional intelligence company” had already raised several million yuan in seed funding during its early days, quickly emerging as a rising star in the fast-growing “AI + pets” sector.
With fresh capital in hand, Traini is preparing to launch an AI-powered smart collar designed to interpret canine language and enable two-way communication between humans and dogs. According to the company, the collar is equipped with Traini’s proprietary PEBI (Pet Emotion and Behavior Intelligence) multimodal emotion-understanding system, which significantly improves the accuracy of canine language recognition.
Even before the collar’s official release, the Traini App had already gained popularity among pet owners thanks to its dog-language translation features. By uploading recordings of their dog’s barks, along with photos or videos, users can identify up to 12 emotional states such as happiness, fear, and confusion. The app also allows owners to translate 18 short human phrases—such as “look here” or “focus”—into canine vocalizations.
Public information shows that Traini was founded in Silicon Valley. Its founder, Arvin Sun, was born in Jilin, China, and has worked across both China and the United States, with entrepreneurial experience spanning retail, logistics, and food delivery.
Riding the momentum of the booming “pet economy,” Traini benefits from two powerful trends at once: the rapid rise of AI and the growing desire among pet owners to better communicate with their “fur kids.” A collar priced at USD 700 represents an early experiment in applying AI hardware to the pet industry—signaling that AI is not only a productivity tool, but also a gateway to a new dimension of human-pet interaction.
From Northeast China to Silicon Valley
On Arvin Sun’s personal profile, his career journey is summarized succinctly: born in Jilin, educated in Hubei, worked in Beijing, Tianjin, and Los Angeles, and now based in Palo Alto, California.
Before moving to the U.S., Sun was already an active serial entrepreneur in China. Starting in 2012, he founded a snack brand called Linjia Shop, an online coffee brand, a digital platform serving beauty salons, and a freight management platform.
In 2018, Sun relocated to the United States and entered the Chinese food delivery space. He served as CEO of delivery platform Gesoo and later as senior general manager at Chowbus, a restaurant management and delivery service. Chowbus’s delivery business was acquired in 2024 by North American delivery giant Fantuan—an acquisition comparable, in Chinese terms, to Meituan acquiring Ele.me.
That acquisition, however, came after Sun had already stepped away. In 2022, he officially founded Traini.
While operating food delivery platforms, Sun also began handling pet food deliveries. During a survey related to dog food, he discovered that more than 70% of pet owners wanted to better understand their dogs’ behavior, and many were willing to spend significant sums on behavioral training programs.
As his research deepened, countless human-pet stories emerged. Some users shared that, during the final moments of a dog battling cancer, they desperately wished they could understand their pet’s “last words.” Others described their dogs as lifelong companions and longed for a deeper emotional connection.
In a high-spending market like the United States, emotional investment in pets translates directly into commercial opportunity. Sun recalls growing up near Changbai Mountain in Jilin, where he had dogs as a child. The heartfelt expectations of pet owners reignited his childhood dream of enabling meaningful communication between humans and dogs.
An “AI Tool” for Talking to Pets
For large language models, translating human languages is routine. Translating “dog language,” however, is entirely uncharted territory.
After two years of development, Sun’s team launched Traini’s core technology: the PEBI (Pet Empathic Behavior Interface) analysis system. This system analyzes a dog’s vocalizations, facial expressions, and behavior patterns to infer psychological states and translate them into human language.
To train the system, Traini collected vocal data and images from more than 100,000 dogs worldwide, building a massive pet emotion database. Over time, the AI learned to associate specific sounds with fatigue, excitement, anger, and other emotional states.
The result is a technological bridge between humans and pets. Owners can “listen” to what their dog’s bark conveys, or translate their own intentions into canine sounds and play them back to their pets.
Traini quickly became a dual hit among both investors and consumers. In its founding year, the company raised several million yuan in seed funding. In 2024, it secured an additional USD 1.5 million in angel funding from investors including venture capital firms and prominent tech entrepreneurs.
Among pet owners, the Traini App gained organic traction. Videos of people issuing commands to their dogs using the app spread rapidly on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. According to the company, the app now covers more than 2 million dogs and has partnered with nearly 40,000 pet stores across the United States.
The latest RMB 50 million funding round enables Traini to take a bolder step—from software into hardware.
Traini claims that its upcoming AI collar can independently recognize and track a dog’s emotional state, translating it into human language in real time. Whether calming, rewarding, or communicating with their pets, owners can interact with greater confidence and clarity.
According to Traini’s website, the collar’s early-bird price is USD 599 (approximately RMB 4,167). After the first 1,000 units are sold, the price will return to its standard USD 700 (around RMB 4,869).
Breakthrough Innovation or Overhyped Tech?
As a premium “AI communication tool” for pets, the collar has sparked mixed reactions. In promotional videos released by the brand, many dogs appear to respond accurately to commands such as “go to bed” or “give me a hug.” However, some users have questioned its reliability, noting that the app sometimes generates dog-language messages even when dogs are silent or when background noise is present, leading to mismatched or ineffective commands.
One U.S. user wrote in an App Store review: “I tried telling my dog to fetch the remote, but he just sat there.”
While AI-powered human-pet communication is an exciting prospect, Traini faces real challenges. Canine vocalizations are highly complex and diverse, varying significantly by breed, age, individual personality, and context. This diversity makes it difficult to build a universal translation system, meaning Traini’s effectiveness is still very much in a validation phase.
Expanding the Imagination of “AI + Pets”
Traini’s popularity is easy to understand. In an era defined by deep emotional bonds between humans and pets, the company positions AI as a new form of infrastructure—one that allows emotional relationships to be enhanced through technology and scaled through capital.
In mature consumer markets such as Europe and the United States, the opportunity is substantial. The global pet market now exceeds USD 260 billion, with the U.S. and Europe accounting for roughly USD 160 billion and growing at an annual rate of about 18%. Among younger generations, pet ownership exceeds 60%, and pets are increasingly viewed as full family members.
Strong emotional demand has created vast niche markets. Estimates suggest that the product category pioneered by Traini is currently worth around USD 1.6 billion and could reach USD 9 billion by 2030.
In contrast, China’s market remains largely untapped. Searches for “smart pet collars” on major e-commerce platforms mainly return basic GPS trackers with features like location tracking and electronic fencing, priced between RMB 100 and a few hundred yuan. Searches for “pet language translators” typically surface low-cost button toys that play pre-recorded human phrases—more training aids than true communication tools.
Within this niche, Traini stands out as a rare innovator. Its emergence coincides with the moment when AI is poised to reshape entire industries, while also sitting at the intersection of emotional value and commercial potential.
Investors remain openly optimistic. One backer noted that AI products embraced by Generation Z represent the future, while another compared Traini’s potential to that of Oura Ring in the smart wearable space.
At the same time, Traini offers a reference point for domestic players. In China, pet intelligence has so far focused on feeders, litter boxes, and drying units, with the deeper capabilities of AI models largely untapped. Some industry insiders admit candidly that many so-called AI pet products today are little more than marketing.
New technology and evolving consumer values have enabled Sun and Traini to carve out a new path called “pet emotional intelligence.” While its ultimate effectiveness remains to be proven and its future uncertain, the idea it reveals is simple yet powerful: in the eyes of caregivers, every need of their “fur kids” deserves careful attention.
