Manchester United vs Fulham: Tactical Breakdown as Cunha Replaces Dorgu, Mount Waits on the Bench, and Carrick Wins Over Roy Keane

Michael Carrick has enjoyed a perfect start to his Manchester United tenure with two consecutive wins, but a very different challenge awaits this Sunday at Old Trafford. Fulham’s disciplined low-block approach will test United’s attacking structure in ways Manchester City and Arsenal did not. Maintaining the efficiency that produced five goals in two matches will be Carrick’s key task.
Under Marco Silva, Fulham are not purely defensive, but when settled, their compact 4-4-2 shape becomes difficult to penetrate. In central areas, four midfield and defensive players form a tight block designed to neutralize opposition No.10s operating between the lines.
This places added importance on United’s centre-backs. If Harry Maguire or Lisandro Martínez step forward with the ball, they can draw Fulham midfielders out of position, opening spaces for attackers. In possession, United could morph into a 3-2-4-1 structure to overload key zones.
Patrick Dorgu’s injury has disrupted Carrick’s original plan, but Matheus Cunha appears the most suitable replacement. The £62.5 million Brazilian has yet to start under Carrick, yet he has made an impact in two substitute appearances as a central forward. While not naturally left-footed, Cunha is comfortable cutting inside, linking effectively with Bruno Fernandes, and his left-foot technique is more than adequate.
As a result, United can largely retain the attacking patterns that worked against City and Arsenal. Carrick has emphasized triangular passing and constant movement in the final third to manipulate defensive lines—an approach that suits Cunha better than Šeško. The €85 million striker may once again begin on the bench, ready to be deployed if a physical breakthrough is required.
Another potential game-changer is Mason Mount. Against deep defensive blocks, United often lack vertical runs and become predictable in sideways circulation. Mount’s intelligent off-the-ball movement can provide that missing penetration, particularly if introduced in the second half with fresh legs. His disallowed goal against City, though controversial, highlighted his tactical value.
Sunday’s clash with Fulham represents another important tactical examination for Carrick. If United continue to create space effectively, their winning run should remain intact. At just 44, Carrick has already won over the dressing room—and is now beginning to convince former critics, including Roy Keane.
Keane’s long-standing friction with Carrick dates back to 2014, following criticism of Carrick’s performance against Olympiacos in the Champions League. A public exchange involving Carrick’s wife escalated the situation, and Keane continued to make pointed remarks over the years. Yet following United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal, Keane softened his stance, openly supporting Carrick’s candidacy for the permanent role.
Still, Keane urged caution. Two wins, he noted, do not define a season. United have shown flashes before, including a victory over Liverpool earlier this campaign. Progress is evident, particularly in attack, but defensive issues remain—and sustained success over the coming months will be the true measure.
