German Table Tennis Officials: China Men’s Team Faces Transition, Fan Zhendong Still Irreplaceable

On January 30, senior figures from German table tennis shared their views on the current state of the Chinese national team during a live broadcast, sparking widespread discussion. They believe that China’s men’s team is experiencing a noticeable transition, and that younger players such as Lin Shidong are still not operating on the same level as Fan Zhendong.

Richard Prase and Benedikt Probst pointed out that China’s long-standing high-intensity training system is undergoing structural changes. The traditional model of extended closed training camps before major tournaments has largely disappeared, replaced by a more individualized development approach tailored to each athlete.

According to their analysis, this shift has slowed the maturation of younger male players, resulting in uneven depth within the men’s squad. In contrast, China’s women’s team continues to demonstrate unquestioned dominance on the global stage.

The German officials emphasized that Fan Zhendong remains a unique and irreplaceable presence. His performances, particularly at the National Games, highlight a clear gap in stability and overall quality compared to the younger generation. While Wang Chuqin has established himself among the world’s elite, the players coming after him still require time to develop consistency and resilience.

“In the past, China regularly fielded the top two, three, or even four players in the world,” they noted. “That level of dominance has declined, but this does not mean decline—it signals a transitional phase.”

They concluded that China still possesses unmatched depth and talent reserves. However, even for a powerhouse like China, developing the next untouchable superstar demands patience, time, and careful nurturing.
