“Aquaman” Down: Rockets Face Triple Challenge After Adams Season-Ending Injury

Houston Rockets fans, brace yourselves—Steven “Aquaman” Adams is out for the season! Following surgery on his left ankle, Adams is unlikely to return for the regular season, with a playoff comeback still uncertain.

Adams first injured his ankle on January 19 against the Pelicans. Initially, the team hoped conservative treatment would suffice, but expert consultation led to surgery, requiring 4–6 months of recovery. Despite playing only 32 games this season, he averaged 5.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 4.5 offensive boards per game (third in the league). A cornerstone of Houston’s rebounding and a locker-room leader, his absence is a heavy blow for the 28–17 Rockets, currently fourth in the Western Conference.

Yet there’s a silver lining. GM Rafael Stone had prepared in advance, signing Clint “Capela” during last summer. Initially criticized, Capela has seamlessly filled Adams’ role, averaging 6 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and a 15.2% offensive rebounding rate, maintaining pick-and-roll and rim protection. Adding another center would further stabilize Houston’s interior.

Secondly, Adams’ absence impacts team tactics. With him on the floor, Houston’s offensive rebounding rate reached a staggering 45%; without him, it drops to 38%. Alperen Şengün will face extended post duties, small-ball lineups with Jalen Green at center will struggle, and pick-and-roll timing will require adjustment, likely causing offensive fluctuations.

Finally, trading Adams isn’t the solution. His rebounding and pick-and-roll value are maximized in Houston’s system, his style and fully guaranteed contract limit trade options, and the season-ending injury exception window has closed. If the Rockets want reinforcements, trading a guard or a first-round pick is a better choice. When Adams returns next season, he will remain a major interior asset.
