A long-standing controversy is taking a new turn! The case of American gymnast Jordan Chiles being stripped of her 2024 Olympic bronze medal has been sent back to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for review, announced by the Swiss Supreme Court on January 29.

Recap: On August 5, 2024, Chiles originally finished 5th in the women’s floor exercise. After a protest by the U.S. coach, her score was adjusted from 13.600 to 13.766, surpassing Romania’s Babosu (13.700) to claim the bronze. Romania appealed, arguing the protest was submitted after the 1-minute window. CAS sided with Romania, restoring the original ranking.

The Swiss Supreme Court now points to new video evidence that may support Chiles’ claim and requires CAS to reexamine the decision. USA Gymnastics immediately pledged full support, emphasizing a fair review including all relevant evidence. Chiles’ lawyer stated they will “do everything possible to secure a full and fair opportunity to defend her bronze medal.”

If the appeal succeeds, the U.S. could gain an additional medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics!
