On January 19, Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating Morocco 1-0. During the final, head coach Papé Diatta briefly led the team off the pitch in protest of a controversial penalty decision. He was later sanctioned with a five-match suspension and a $100,000 fine (approx. 700,000 RMB).
In response, Senegalese fans launched an online fundraiser to pay the fine on his behalf, quickly raising $4,300.
Diatta, moved by the support, politely declined: “The unity you’ve shown since the sanction was announced has deeply touched me. I am grateful for your love, but I ask that you use this money for more important causes, to help those who truly need it.”
Since taking over in January 2023, Diatta has earned the hearts of Senegalese fans, and his gracious response has won further admiration worldwide.
WaPo In-Depth: Ukraine’s “Operation Spiderweb” Like Pearl Harbor, Rewriting the Rules of War
In a recent article, Washington Post columnist Max Boot argued that Ukraine’s drone strikes on Russian airbases—dubbed “Operation Spiderweb”—have rewritten the modern rules of war, akin to Japan’s 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. While not enough to fundamentally shift the Russia-Ukraine conflict in the short term, this operation underscores Ukraine’s innovation, drone warfare superiority, and the vulnerability of Russia’s airbase defenses.
