“Go Back to China!” Ugly Scene at the Australian Open: Chinese Mother and Son Targeted by a White Couple’s Racist Abuse Over a Bizarre Trigger

Joanne, a Chinese woman living in Australia, recently shared a troubling experience from the Australian Open, saying she and her 12-year-old son were subjected to racist abuse while watching a match in the stands.
The Australian Open is often celebrated as the “Happy Slam,” with signage around the venue emphasizing that it is “a place where everyone is welcome.” Yet Joanne said what happened during her visit painted a very different picture.
According to her account, the incident took place during the daytime session on the tournament’s eighth day. She was seated in Section 7, Row J, attending the first match of the day. While she did not specify the exact match, she noted it was part of the day’s scheduled program.
After taking her seat, Joanne said she felt warm from walking and casually brushed her hair back a few times. She claims a white man sitting behind her reacted aggressively, telling her her hair had touched his hand and demanding that she tie it up.
Joanne responded that spectators are not prohibited from adjusting their hair or making normal movements, and suggested he check the venue’s audience rules. Still, in an effort to prevent the situation from escalating, she moved to a nearby empty seat.
She said the situation intensified when the man’s wife directed racist remarks at her and her son, including “Go back to your country” and “Go back to China.” Joanne described the comments as clearly discriminatory and deeply offensive.
Joanne also alleged that the couple made obscene gestures, secretly took photos of her, and refused to delete them when asked.
In explaining why she decided to speak publicly, Joanne emphasized that staying silent only enables prejudice. Since her post, she said the incident has drawn attention from media outlets in Australia and the UK, further amplifying calls for accountability and a stronger commitment to inclusion at major sporting events.
