At 57, Ma Tak-chung reveals he has ankylosing spondylitis, says it has no cure and can be life-threatening, and denies leaving TVB due to illness

Veteran Hong Kong actor Joe Ma Tak-chung, 57, has long been known for his disciplined and athletic image. In a recent interview, however, he revealed that he has ankylosing spondylitis—a chronic condition that cannot be fully cured and requires long-term management. He also noted that if the disease becomes severe at a younger age, it can carry serious health risks.

On February 1, Ma attended a promotional event for the drama Very Prosecutorial View. The atmosphere was light at first as he joked with two actresses on stage. When the conversation shifted to performing ballet-like movements, Ma brought up his condition, explaining that he currently relies on medication to keep symptoms under control. While his day-to-day state is generally stable, he added that the physical demands of acting and performance can sometimes trigger discomfort.

Ma spoke calmly, almost as if discussing routine health maintenance. Standing beside him, actress Hera Chan Hiu-wa appeared surprised and concerned, saying she had not heard about it before and that she would be more mindful when working with him in the future.

Ma is a well-known leading man associated with TVB and recently announced that he would be leaving the broadcaster to work as a freelance performer. When asked whether his health played a role in the decision, he denied any connection, saying the condition has been with him for years and that he plans to continue taking on projects, including work in mainland China.

The entertainment industry has seen other public figures discuss ankylosing spondylitis as well, including Jay Chou, Zhang Jiayi, and Li Yuchun. These cases often highlight that with consistent treatment and lifestyle management, many people can maintain relatively stable routines. Reports also note that Ma regularly exercises and has shared fitness moments with his family, suggesting his condition is being managed well.
