Veteran Hong Kong entertainer Tang Chiu-chun, 58, son of the late Cantonese opera legend Sun Ma Sze Tsang (Tang Wing-cheung), has long been the subject of public curiosity due to rumors surrounding his wealth.
It has been widely speculated that Tang inherited HKD 1.5 billion from his father and has since lived a “laid-back” life supported solely by interest income. Some even claimed his assets have grown to HKD 1.7 billion, earning him the title of “the most successful second-generation rich.”
More recently, rumors escalated, suggesting Tang earns as much as HKD 40,000 per day in interest. Unable to ignore the claims any longer, Tang finally addressed the speculation, stressing that he is, in fact, an ordinary person who works every day.
In a video shared on social media, Tang jokingly responded while holding his phone, saying, “If I really had that much money, I’d have bought a yacht and taken everyone on vacation already, right?”
He acknowledged that exaggerated stories are often spread online for attention, but added with a smile, “There should still be some sense of reality.”
Tang reiterated that he works hard for a living and is far from living off passive income. When asked about lending money, he humorously replied, “Give me some time — I’ll work even harder!”
Despite his lighthearted response, some netizens remained skeptical, leaving comments such as, “Tang Chiu-chun: Wealth shouldn’t be flaunted — don’t blame us if you get kidnapped,” and “HKD 40,000 a day? Are you trying to curse him?”
Previously, during an online show Entertainment Is Fun, co-hosted with Ng Ka Lok, Tang had already dismissed claims of possessing HKD 1.7 billion. “People keep saying I have 1.7 billion — where did that number come from?” he said. “If I really had it, I’d split it with whoever made that claim. I’ve never even seen one billion.” Ng jokingly teased that for Tang, one billion dollars was merely “small change.”
