Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (Xu Xiyuan) passed away suddenly in Japan on February 2 last year due to influenza complications. She was 48 and is laid to rest at Chin Pao San. Yesterday (the 2nd) marked the first anniversary of her passing, and a memorial statue—personally designed by her husband, Koo Jun-yup—was unveiled on the same day.

The ceremony took place under steady drizzle, with a somber atmosphere as many relatives and close friends attended to pay their respects. Among those present were Jerry Yan and Vic Chou.

According to Taiwanese media ETtoday’s Star Cloud, Yan and Hsu formed a lasting bond after working together on Meteor Garden in 2001. What began as an on-screen connection reportedly grew into a close friendship that remained strong for more than two decades.

During the event, Yan appeared visibly emotional, with swollen, reddened eyes and an anguished expression. He kept a low profile throughout and did not make any public remarks. As he left, Chou was seen holding an umbrella for him while supporting him by the arm, a moment that moved many viewers.

After the footage circulated online, netizens responded with emotional comments such as, “He cried even harder than Vic—he’s truly loyal and caring,” “Jerry Yan looked like he was falling apart,” and “It felt like Dao Ming Si and Hua Ze Lei attending Shan Cai’s farewell.”
