Last August, the Tesla Model YL quietly appeared on the official website. With a body length approaching five meters and a wheelbase exceeding three meters, it landed squarely in the sweet spot of Chinese consumer preferences. Together with the refreshed Model Y—Tesla’s long-standing sales pillar—the Model YL helped stabilize deliveries at a critical moment.

After milestones such as FSD testing in China and the headline-grabbing surge of orders for the Xiaomi YU7, the year-end buzzwords in the auto market became unmistakable: “large three-row SUVs.” These vehicles are typically over five meters long, with wheelbases beyond three meters, and most adopt six-seat layouts. Built to MPV standards but marketed as SUVs, they have quickly become the new focal point.

Just a month after the updated Denza N9 launched, a lightly revised N8L followed. At 5.2 meters long, it easily qualifies as a full-size SUV. Yet next to the 5.4-meter, 4.2-ton Yangwang U8L, even this “large” vehicle can feel intimidatingly modest.

More recently, the newly unveiled NIO ES9—first revealed through regulatory filings—boasts dimensions that surpass the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, all but guaranteeing it a life incompatible with mechanical parking garages. BYD’s Dynasty-series “Tang Grand,” a new flagship SUV, was also leaked ahead of schedule, eclipsing the AITO M9 in length, width, and height. Passengers in the third row may as well be considered long-distance companions.

The trend is unmistakable. This year’s new-car market is set to continue moving toward ever-larger vehicles. Judged by length and wheelbase alone, the once-imposing Li Auto L9—previously marketed as a “mobile home”—now looks almost compact amid a sea of rolling luxury apartments. With two-meter-wide SUVs squeezed into older parking spaces, drivers are not only testing their skills, but also the patience of their neighbors.

How this explosion of oversized three-row SUVs will ultimately reshape the market remains uncertain. What is certain is that either drivers’ parallel-parking abilities or automakers’ autonomous parking algorithms—if not both—are about to face a serious stress test.

Bigger, Everywhere You Look

Whether it’s oversized wheels occupying half a lane or half a hood protruding from a parking spot, the message is clear: roads haven’t shrunk—cars have grown.

There is no rigid global standard for vehicle size classifications, but conventionally, mid-to-large SUVs measure between 4.8 and 5.0 meters in length with wheelbases of 2.8 to 3.0 meters. Full-size SUVs exceed five meters in length and three meters in wheelbase.

By this measure, the BMW X5 only just brushes the threshold of the full-size category. Meanwhile, many domestically produced mid-to-large SUVs now rival traditional full-size models in every dimension. Newly launched large SUVs frequently exceed 5.1 meters in length with wheelbases well beyond 3.1 meters.

Compared with compact SUVs—long the backbone of family mobility thanks to their practicality and affordability—large SUVs represent a new frontier for new-energy vehicles. Compact SUVs account for over a quarter of the passenger car market and nearly half of all SUV sales. Large vehicles, by contrast, have historically been niche products.

That balance has begun to shift. Since mid-2022, mid-to-large SUVs have steadily gained share, while full-size SUVs remain below 2%. Yet in the second half of last year, large vehicles outpaced the broader SUV market in growth. Overall SUV growth plateaued around 10%, but mid-to-large SUVs rebounded sharply after July and became the only SUV segment posting sustained positive growth by November, with monthly sales nearing 100,000 units—surpassing small SUVs.

Short-term spikes can be misleading, but growth sustained over nearly half a year suggests something more structural is at work.

In the full-size SUV segment, momentum has been just as clear. In 2023, fewer than five models surpassed annual sales of 10,000 units, with the Li Auto L9 leading at roughly 110,000 units. By 2025, six-seat full-size SUVs had become the undisputed stars. Multiple models exceeded 100,000 units annually, and more than ten full-size SUVs crossed the 10,000-unit threshold. Some brands shouldered volume, others profitability—and together they reshaped the segment.

Automakers are eager to build them, consumers are eager to buy them, and as a result, new-energy vehicles as a whole have visibly “grown.” In 2025, large SUVs emerged as the most promising growth engine in the SUV market.

So no, it’s not just Americans who love big pickups. In China, the equivalent cultural icon is the large three-row SUV.

It’s (Mostly) the Battery’s Fault

The move toward larger new-energy vehicles did not happen overnight. Before cars grew longer, they first grew wider.

Consider that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class measures 1,921 mm wide—a size that once defined “large” in the combustion-engine era. In today’s EV market, however, that width is surpassed by many B- and C-segment electric sedans.

The primary culprit is the battery. EV platforms are built around large, flat battery packs integrated into the floor. Compared with similarly sized gasoline vehicles, EVs tend to be taller with thicker underbodies. Once vertical expansion hits practical limits, the only way to add capacity is to increase length and width.

Safety compounds the issue. In side impacts, traditional vehicles distribute energy through door beams and pillars. In EVs, side impacts risk directly striking the battery pack, prompting engineers to reinforce sills and floor cross-members. The trade-off is additional width.

As vehicles grew longer and six-seat layouts became common, batteries once again took the blame.

Back in 2019, most EVs sold in China were compact or smaller, with battery capacities around 30 kWh and real-world range under 300 km. Large SUVs were economically unviable. Batteries were expensive—often accounting for over 100,000 yuan in cost—and heavy, with early 80 kWh packs weighing more than 600 kg. Energy density limitations meant bigger vehicles gained little usable range despite carrying more mass.

Range-extended powertrains offered a temporary workaround, balancing cost and range and creating a generation of family-friendly bestsellers.

Over the past few years, however, scale effects and stabilizing raw material prices have dramatically reduced battery costs. At the same time, higher cell energy density and advanced integration technologies have cut structural overhead. Large batteries are no longer a luxury.

Today, full-size electric SUVs routinely exceed 80 kWh in capacity, while range-extended models pair large fuel tanks with sizable batteries to deliver combined ranges beyond 1,000 km.

Against that reassurance—and the comfort of expansive interiors—a little extra sweat while parking suddenly feels like a small price to pay.

Demand Made Visible

SUVs remain the largest segment in the passenger car market because they serve the most common use case: the family.

Family cars must do everything. They are often driven solo, yet expected to accommodate everyone on holidays. Long trips may be rare, but cargo space is non-negotiable. Third-row seats are like laptop webcams—you may not use them often, but you want them there.

By 2025, China’s car ownership reached nearly 53 vehicles per 100 households, still well below levels in developed economies. For many families, one car must do it all. In the EV era, range and space dominate purchasing decisions.

Strip away budget and infrastructure constraints, and few people anywhere would refuse more space and better comfort. Chinese consumers, in particular, have long shown a preference for larger vehicles—a trend now fully enabled by electric platforms.

Globally, this shift is hardly unique. In the United States, large vehicles and pickups dominate sales, while average vehicle footprints have steadily increased. Europe tells a similar story: even traditionally compact segments have grown significantly over the past two decades.

So if the SUV ahead of you seems to drift over the lane markings, don’t get angry. Chances are, the driver is still adjusting to just how big their car has become.
