Official Response to WeChat’s HarmonyOS Version Camera Interface Update: Still Uses Huawei’s System Camera, with Improved Performance

On February 8, Fast Technology reported that some users noticed a change after updating the HarmonyOS version of WeChat: the photo-taking interface now looks similar to the Android version, prompting speculation that WeChat might no longer be calling the system camera.

In response, a WeChat employee known as “Kecun Xiaojiang” shared an official explanation from Huawei customer service to address the concerns.

According to Huawei support, the HarmonyOS edition of WeChat is still using Huawei’s system camera capabilities. The recent adjustment mainly focuses on optimizing WeChat’s photo-taking interaction flow, which is why the interface now appears cleaner and more streamlined.

Huawei customer service further noted that WeChat’s camera experience continues to support key Huawei imaging features—including Hongfeng imaging and zoom—while also delivering improvements in both power efficiency and overall performance. Users can therefore continue using it with confidence.

That said, Huawei also emphasized that the real-world experience still depends on WeChat’s own implementation strategy. For users who need more advanced or comprehensive camera features, Huawei recommends using the phone’s built-in camera app.

Fast Technology also highlighted that the HarmonyOS version of WeChat has surpassed 40 million installs. Since its launch on Huawei’s HarmonyOS App Market in January 2025, WeChat has maintained a rapid update pace, with more than 100 iterations to date. The latest version is 8.0.15.38.

At present, the HarmonyOS WeChat app supports core functions such as basic messaging and communication, social features, WeChat Pay, Official Accounts, Mini Programs, Channels, and live streaming—showing steady progress in both usability and overall feature completeness.
