Eileen Gu Reflects on Milan Winter Olympics: Learned Grandmother Passed Away, Took Big Risk in Three Events

On February 23, 22-year-old Eileen Gu competed in three freestyle skiing events at the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics, winning 1 gold and 2 silver medals with a 100% medal rate. She became the first woman in history to defend a halfpipe gold medal. After the competition, Gu tearfully revealed she had just learned her grandmother had passed and reflected on the challenge of entering three events.

Gu said: “My grandmother was one of the most important parts of my life. I promised her I would always be brave. Competing in three events was like sprinting a marathon; every day required full effort. I’m glad I did it and hope to inspire others to make the world better.”
