(Taipei, Jan 18) The competition in generative AI has intensified heading into 2026, with major shifts emerging in the global market. As Google deeply integrates Gemini into the Android system and Workspace ecosystem, long-time leader OpenAI and its flagship product ChatGPT are facing unprecedented pressure.

Is the rivalry between the two AI giants reaching a critical turning point? And why are users increasingly switching platforms? Taiwan’s Central News Agency outlines four key questions to analyze the latest market dynamics.

Has personalization narrowed the gap?

The competition has shifted from model size to real-world application. Leveraging its massive user data and ecosystem, Google has rapidly enhanced Gemini’s personalized services through deep account integration.

With user consent, Gemini can access emails, calendars, and cloud documents, offering context-aware suggestions such as reminding users to follow up on projects based on recent meetings—an experience difficult for a standalone ChatGPT to fully replicate.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT has responded with the GPT-5 series, strengthening long-term memory and maintaining high accuracy in complex, cross-domain reasoning tasks. Analysts suggest the rivalry now centers on ecosystem convenience versus reasoning depth.

Market share trends in 2026

According to Similarweb, ChatGPT’s web traffic share dropped from 86.7% a year ago to 64.5%, while still leading the market. Gemini, however, surged from 5.7% to 21.5%, becoming the fastest-growing contender.

Data from Sensor Tower shows ChatGPT still exceeds 800 million weekly active users, though growth has slowed.

Gemini’s strengths and weaknesses

Gemini excels in handling millions of tokens, enabling it to analyze lengthy videos and full manuals in a single session. Its native multimodal capabilities and seamless integration with Google Maps and YouTube further enhance performance.

However, its conservative response style—aimed at avoiding copyright and ethical risks—can limit depth. Some users also report inconsistencies in cross-conversation memory.

How does ChatGPT retain users?

ChatGPT continues to stand out in creativity, natural language tone, and logical reasoning, particularly in coding and complex problem-solving. Its developer ecosystem includes over a million third-party customized applications.

That said, higher integration barriers, occasional response delays in advanced models, and concerns over verbosity and data privacy remain challenges. OpenAI’s recent announcement to test ads in the free version aims to offset computing costs while maintaining accessibility, but ad placements could disrupt user experience—potentially accelerating user migration—while making ad-free access a key incentive for paid subscribers.
