(Hong Kong, 24th) The hit show Midlife, Sing & Shine! 4 aired the first round of its “Black & White Glory Switch Battle” on the night of the 22nd. The top 30 contestants were split into the Upper “Black Team” and Lower “White Team” based on prior rankings, competing in one-on-one duels for 24 advancement spots. The opening round saw a clean sweep by the Black Team, while two contestants from the White Team were eliminated.

The first matchup featured Law Tin-yu from the White Team performing Alluring City against Cheng Chung-ho from the Black Team with Lose Control. Tin-yu continued his signature “male voice covering female songs,” but struggled with nerves after performing without his “Lion King” mask for the first time. Despite quiet support from rumored girlfriend Chan Yik-tak, he scored only 82 points and fell into the danger zone. Judge Hedy noted his tension and narrow stance affecting breath control, while Maria Cordero commented that he overused vocal techniques: “Too much.”

In contrast, Cheng Chung-ho stepped out of his comfort zone, abandoning his usual rock style to perform the soul track Lose Control. His raspy yet passionate vocals impressed the judges, earning the night’s highest score of 93. Maria joked he was “lucky” to have live band support, while Chow Kwok-fung praised his nuanced interpretation: “Even though it’s ‘Lose Control,’ you showed multiple layers of ‘Control.’”

Another highlight saw Wong Ngai-fai from the White Team face the formidable Black Team contestant, Yat-yi. Performing Wang Leehom’s Our Song, Ngai-fai lost tempo midway and scored just 78 points, leading to his elimination. Judges criticized his timing issues and lack of energy. Meanwhile, Yat-yi moved the audience with an emotional performance of You Raise Me Up, even tearing up on stage. Judges applauded her for relying on pure emotion rather than excessive technique.

At the end of the round, all Black Team contestants—Cheng Chung-ho, Hui Mei-ki, Cheuk Yau-yin, Ma Ho-yee, and Yat-yi—advanced. From the White Team, Wong Ngai-fai and Choi Man-keui were eliminated. Ngai-fai joked about deserving an award, while Man-keui reflected that the experience was about self-growth and friendship. Host Carman Che described him as a true “giver,” embodying the spirit of the show.

Midlife, Sing & Shine! 4 airs every Sunday at 8 PM on TVB Jade.
