Kenneth Fok Reflects on Privileged Upbringing — Credits Mother’s Influence, Says He Never Had Bodyguards and Often Took the Bus

(Hong Kong, 24th) Kenneth Fok, often seen as a prominent heir of a wealthy family, recently gave a rare and candid interview, opening up about his upbringing and family values—offering the public a more personal glimpse into his life.

Despite being the grandson of business magnate Henry Fok, Kenneth revealed that he grew up without bodyguards and frequently took public transport, including buses and minibuses, reflecting a grounded and modest lifestyle.

In the interview with veteran media figure Stephen Chan on Commercial Radio’s program, he spoke with deep respect about his mother, Loletta Chu, a former Miss Hong Kong renowned for her elegance and poise.

Fok shared that his mother was mindful of the risks of growing up in privilege. At around age 12, she made the deliberate decision to send him to study in the UK, encouraging independence and self-reliance. “She didn’t want me to depend on household staff or drivers—she wanted me to learn how to take care of myself,” he said.

He added that his mother emphasized the importance of integrity, self-discipline, and understanding one’s limits, while always believing in one’s own capabilities.

Growing up under constant public attention, Fok acknowledged the pressures that came with his background. However, he credited his mother for providing strong emotional guidance, teaching him that external opinions are beyond one’s control and that staying true to oneself matters most.

Speaking about his father, Timothy Fok, Kenneth offered a contrasting perspective to the public image—describing him as serious in public but easygoing and artistically inclined in private.

Reflecting on his upbringing, he reiterated: “I never had bodyguards. Not me, not my father, not even my grandfather.”
