Idy Chan reveals the truth behind “regretting her marriage to Lau Kar-leung”—gave up her career for a passionate love

(Hong Kong, 22nd) Hong Kong personality Melvin Wong recently appeared on her online program Dangerous Figures 2.0 alongside her longtime friend Shirley, whom she has known for 47 years. In a candid conversation, the two reflected on their experiences with age-gap relationships during their youth, describing themselves as “cautionary examples” and urging others not to follow the same path.
Following the discussion, Wong addressed public reactions during an interview at a charity event on the 21st, clarifying remarks that had been interpreted as “regret” over her marriage to martial arts legend Lau Kar-leung.
According to HK01, Wong married Lau after his previous divorce and has two daughters with him. While her marriage has often been perceived as stable, she admitted in the program that she had considered leaving multiple times, stating, “I regret it.”
However, she clarified that her “regret” was not about marrying Lau itself, but about the choices she made at a crossroads in life. “I did not regret marrying him—many people misunderstood. What I meant was that there were other paths I could have taken,” she explained. She could have chosen to see him as a mentor or a friend, “but I chose a passionate relationship instead.”
Wong revealed that her true regret lies in not following her mother’s advice to focus on education and career development. “The regret is about my own impulsiveness, not blaming others,” she said, adding that life decisions often lead to entirely different outcomes depending on the path chosen.
Reflecting on her journey, she described choosing “the right path” at the time, even though she may have internally preferred “the left.” Still, she emphasized that it is never too late to share lessons learned, encouraging others to listen to parental guidance when facing major life decisions.
When asked if she would advise her daughters in the same way, Wong quoted her mother: “If I choose a husband for you and it’s wrong, you can come back and cry to me. But if you choose him yourself, you must bear the responsibility.” She joked that the statement felt somewhat like a “warning.”
She also cited an example of arranged marriages in India, noting that parental choices often consider long-term compatibility, whereas individuals tend to decide based on emotion.
Despite her views, Wong acknowledged that her daughters have made their own choices. Her elder daughter married around the age of 40, while her younger daughter is already married and has three children born during the pandemic. “Life goes on, and everyone walks their own path,” she concluded.
