Wong Jing Sparks Controversy Discussing Danny Chan’s Cause of Death; Barbara Yung Criticizes Lack of Respect

(Hong Kong, March 22) Actress Melanie Ong (翁靜晶) recently attended the launch ceremony of the charity organization “Ignite True Love,” established by the fan club of late Cantopop legend Danny Chan (陳百強).

She revealed that she is currently serving as the acting president and expressed hope that Pansy Ho (何超瓊) will take over in the future, noting that Ho shared a close personal relationship with Chan and often traveled with him, while her own interactions with him were mainly work-related.

In response to filmmaker Wong Jing (王晶) recently discussing Chan’s cause of death and commenting that his musical direction was relatively limited, Ong stated that as a friend, certain matters are not appropriate to discuss publicly.

She said, “He has already passed away, and even if such things are said, he cannot respond. He also has many supporters who may not accept these claims. If one is neither directly involved nor a family member, even if aware of certain details, it is more appropriate for the family to address them.”

Ong emphasized that Chan still has surviving siblings and that publicly discussing such matters would be disrespectful to his family.

She added, “The ones truly hurt are not those who have passed on, but their families. Chan had many loyal fans, just like Leslie Cheung (張國榮), and both were deeply loved. A person’s lifelong reputation is not easily built—why damage it after they are gone? I don’t think that is appropriate.”

She also noted that she had not watched Wong Jing’s related video and only learned about it through media reports. She reiterated that Chan pursued perfection in life, and his death certificate already provided clear explanations, thus she prefers not to comment further.

Ong concluded that if the family wishes to disclose more details about his death, it should be done by them directly.
