(Taipei, 21st) Former news anchor Hsueh Kai-li has been charged with allegedly defrauding her wealthy ex-boyfriend Chiu Chih-yung of NT$4.2 million (approx. RM517,500) under the pretense of a “debt settlement fee.” The Taipei District Court held a hearing today, summoning Chiu to testify, as both parties presented conflicting accounts.

According to prosecutors, Hsueh claimed in 2022 that she had connections—including a TV station acquaintance who allegedly knew individuals from organized crime—who could help resolve Chiu’s financial disputes. She reportedly requested NT$4.2 million for the arrangement. Chiu withdrew the cash and handed it over, even coordinating with her to request police escort services at a bank. Hsueh allegedly brought the money to a TV station to create the impression of transferring it to a third party, leading to fraud charges.

During testimony, Chiu stated that the two met through mutual friends in 2021 and entered a relationship with marriage in mind. Over time, he became aware of her financial difficulties. He added that, aside from the disputed amount, he had also provided additional financial support, including rent and educational expenses for her daughter.

Chiu became emotional in court, claiming he had been “bullied” for a long time. He also mentioned a proposal ring he purchased, alleging it remains in Hsueh’s possession. He explained that he cooperated with certain actions at the time due to external pressure and a lack of trust in the system.

Hsueh, however, denied all allegations, calling Chiu’s claims unfounded. She insisted she never took any ring and described Chiu as affectionate during their relationship, saying he frequently contacted her and even proposed marriage.

She further countered that Chiu had promised to take care of her and her daughter but failed to follow through, and later resumed a relationship with his ex-girlfriend. Hsueh stated she holds evidence and urged Chiu to be cautious with his statements.

The case remains under trial, with the court yet to determine the facts and liability.
