Fish Liew Chi-yu and Carlos Chan Ka-lok Push Boundaries with Bold Performances in Love Like Mine — Premiering in Malaysia on April 9 (Limited Release)

(Kuala Lumpur, March 28) The Malaysian film Love Like Me, directed and written by Tam Wai-ching and produced by Stanley Kwan and Koon Tung-tiu, starring Fish Liew and Carlos Chan, is set for a nationwide limited release on April 9.

The film tells a poignant story of love that transcends physical limitations and societal prejudice. It follows Ami, a young woman with cerebral palsy, who meets Ah Kin, a volunteer providing intimate services to people with disabilities. One longs to take control of her life despite physical constraints, while the other appears whole on the outside but carries emotional wounds within. Their connection evolves from physical interaction into a deeply emotional and morally complex relationship.

Focusing on the often-overlooked themes of love and sexual rights among people with disabilities, the film explores the intersection of desire, dignity, and ethical boundaries. It presents a nuanced portrayal of intimacy, challenging conventional narratives and inviting audiences to reconsider preconceived notions.

Since its debut, the film has gained international recognition, being selected for the “Women’s Empowerment” section at the Tokyo International Film Festival and featured in the “Gala Presentation” section of the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival.

Fish Liew delivers a powerful performance, having immersed herself in extensive research by interacting with individuals living with cerebral palsy. Her portrayal captures both the physical and emotional realities of the character, earning her Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards, along with a nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Carlos Chan, meanwhile, departs from his usual upbeat image to reveal a more introspective and layered performance. He shared that he was going through a personal low point during filming, battling anxiety and insomnia, which allowed him to connect deeply with his character. His performance also earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
