A recent CBA regular-season matchup saw the Qingdao Eagles dominate the Beijing Royal Fighters 105–80, sparking widespread discussion. Despite fielding key players such as Zou Yuchen, Shen Zijie, and Liao Sanning, Beijing collapsed after the first quarter and trailed by 15 points at halftime.

What stood out even more was Qingdao’s performance without star center Yang Hansen, raising serious questions about Beijing’s competitiveness. Some fans have even suggested that the team may be “tanking,” especially after dropping out of the top 12 standings.

Structurally, Beijing’s biggest issue lies in its frontcourt imbalance. While they possess two national-level big men, the lack of perimeter shooting severely limits offensive spacing, making it difficult to capitalize on their interior presence.

This has reignited speculation around Shen Zijie’s future. There is growing belief that the Guangdong Southern Tigers could pursue him as a potential trade target. Although Shen’s recent form has declined compared to his former teammate He Xining, he remains a high-impact defensive center.

From a tactical perspective, Shen fits well into Guangdong’s fast-paced system and has previously built chemistry with players like Xu Jie and Hu Mingxuan. Notably, he also won a championship under coach Du Feng at the National Games, highlighting an existing understanding within the system.

Meanwhile, Beijing faces internal challenges. With Wang Shaojie expected to return, the frontcourt rotation could become overcrowded, further diminishing Shen’s role and market value. A trade may therefore benefit both sides.

One proposed scenario involves a swap centered around Jiao Boqiao, whose skill set as a power forward may better suit Beijing’s needs. Shen, on the other hand, could immediately strengthen Guangdong’s interior defense and rim protection.

In summary, if both teams fail to meet expectations this season, a Shen–Jiao swap could emerge as a mutually beneficial move with both short-term and long-term implications.
