(Beijing, March 31) The NBA has officially approved the sale of the controlling stake in the Portland Trail Blazers to an investment group led by Tom Dundon. The deal is expected to be finalized this week, marking a new ownership era for the franchise—and for Chinese prospect Yang Hansen.

The transaction is valued at approximately $4.25 billion, ending the team’s ownership under the Paul Allen family since 1988. The acquisition will be completed in two phases:

  • 80.1% stake at a $4.0 billion valuation (closing April 1)
  • Remaining 19.9% at a $4.5 billion valuation (by 2028)

During the transition, former chairman Bert Kolde will attend board meetings without decision-making authority.

Dundon, also a major stakeholder in the Carolina Hurricanes, is known for aggressive investment and analytics-driven decision-making. Since acquiring the Hurricanes in 2018, he has increased payroll, secured public funding for arena upgrades, and built a consistent playoff team.

The investment group includes prominent figures across finance and business sectors, signaling a long-term strategic vision for the franchise.

Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers are pursuing a $600 million renovation of the Moda Center, with significant public funding already pledged by the state of Oregon.

Notably, the Allen estate announced in 2025 that proceeds from the sale would be donated to charitable causes, adding broader significance to the transaction.

Overall, this ownership change could reshape the franchise’s strategic direction, from roster building to long-term operations.
