On April 1 (Beijing time), Iraq defeated Bolivia 2–1 in the intercontinental playoff final, securing the final spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and marking their return after 40 years.

With the tournament expanded to 48 teams, the AFC was allocated 8.5 slots, but a record 9 Asian teams have qualified — Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.

Iraq’s qualification is historic, their first since 1986. To celebrate, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani declared a two-day national holiday, calling the achievement a milestone that reflects national spirit and unity through sport.

After four decades, Iraq is back on football’s biggest stage.
