Every September marks China’s National Healthy Lifestyle Month, themed “Cultivating healthy habits, strengthening family well-being.”
Good habits are essential for wellness—but some popular ones might actually be doing more harm than good.
Dr. Wang Zhiyi from Tsinghua Changgung Hospital reveals 13 common “health myths” that need debunking.

❌ Myth 1: Eating Light = Eating Vegetarian

A “light diet” means low oil, low salt, and balanced nutrition—not strict vegetarianism. Long-term vegan diets can cause protein, vitamin B12, and iron deficiency. A truly healthy light diet combines lean meats, eggs, dairy, grains, and vegetables.

❌ Myth 2: 10,000 Steps a Day = Healthier You

It’s not about numbers, but quality. Excessive walking strains your knees. Instead, aim for moderate-intensity exercise—30 minutes of brisk walking daily works wonders.

❌ Myth 3: The Hotter the Foot Bath, the Better

Water hotter than 45°C can cause burns, especially for diabetics. Keep it around 40°C and soak for 15–20 minutes only.

❌ Myth 4: Longer Toothbrushing = Cleaner Teeth

Brushing too hard erodes enamel. Use the Bass brushing method—2 minutes, soft bristles, gentle motion.

❌ Myth 5: Hard Beds Heal Back Pain

A mattress that’s too firm worsens back pain. Choose medium firmness that supports natural spinal curves.

❌ Myth 6: Cleaning Ears Regularly = Healthy

Earwax protects your ears. Over-cleaning can lead to injury or infection. See a doctor if you feel blocked.

❌ Myth 7: Yogurt After Meals Aids Digestion

Probiotics don’t digest food; they balance gut flora. Drink unsweetened yogurt between meals instead.

❌ Myth 8: Disinfecting Underwear = Cleaner

Frequent chemical disinfection irritates skin. Soap and sunlight are the safest and most effective.

❌ Myth 9: Detox Tea = Constipation Cure

Many “detox teas” contain laxatives, causing dependence and even colon damage. Cure constipation naturally—with fiber, water, and exercise.

❌ Myth 10: Hot Food and Drinks Are Healthy

Foods above 65°C can damage your esophagus and increase cancer risk. Warm, not hot, is best.

❌ Myth 11: Daily Vitamin Pills = Health Insurance

Overuse can harm your liver and kidneys. Supplement only under medical advice.

❌ Myth 12: Sugar-Free = Guilt-Free

Artificial sweeteners can disrupt metabolism. Use moderately, and gradually reduce your sweet tolerance.

❌ Myth 13: No Carbs = Fast Weight Loss

Cutting carbs drains water and muscle, not fat. Opt for whole grains and fiber-rich carbs for sustainable weight control.

✅ Bottom line: True health isn’t about following fads—it’s about balance, science, and self-awareness.
