Gou Li Hao Xi 2.0 Returns with an Upgrade—KK Wong Kok Cheong Fights Back Tears in Debut, Lee Yong Cheong Says Life’s Lows Sparked Creative Inspiration

(Kuala Lumpur, April 3) The award-winning musical stage production Kopi Power Show 2.0 has made a powerful comeback, officially opening on Thursday night. Producer KK Wong Kok Xiang was visibly emotional after the premiere, even tearing up as he expressed, “I’m truly grateful to everyone behind and in front of the stage. Without their support, we wouldn’t be here today.” Director Lee Yong Chang revealed that the story was born during one of the lowest points in his life, with the protagonist’s struggles reflecting his own experiences.

The upgraded version features three story segments centered on mental health. The narrative follows Fu Fan (played by Chen Xingfu) and his friend Mike (Cheah Cheng Wai), who run a workshop that creates personalized “healing scripts” to help clients confront emotional wounds through theatre.

The first story focuses on a new mother, Liu Xinxin (Chen Hui Tian), who struggles with self-doubt after leaving her career to raise a child. Through a staged “perfect mom” showdown with Wang Lele (played by KK Wong), she ultimately learns that embracing imperfection is key.

The second segment tells the story of Li Min (Lee Sin Yee), who is about to marry her younger fiancé but is criticized for her emotional detachment. Through guided storytelling, she confronts past traumas from her childhood and teenage years, eventually rediscovering her emotional expression.

The third segment shifts to Fu Fan himself—a man who helps others heal but cannot heal himself. Facing his mother’s critical illness, career pressure, and past heartbreak, he spirals into despair before being pulled back by those around him. He ultimately learns that acknowledging vulnerability is a form of strength.

The cast delivered compelling performances, with Chen Xingfu showcasing a powerful emotional arc, Cheah Cheng Wai bringing versatility and humor, and Kopi (Lim Kok Wai) impressing with dynamic multi-role performances that energized the audience throughout.

During the curtain call, director Lee shared that the play was inspired by his personal hardships over the past two years, including family loss and career setbacks. He encouraged audiences to reflect: “Don’t just ask others if they’re okay—ask yourself too.”

KK also revealed that after the successful first run in September, the team decided within three days to relaunch the show as version 2.0, followed by six months of intensive rehearsals. “This is not just a show—it’s a conversation about emotions,” he said. A special sharing session will also be held on April 19.

Upcoming performances will take place on April 3 (8PM), April 4 (3PM & 8PM), and April 5 (3PM) at PJPAC, with ticket prices ranging from RM88 to RM228.
