Breaking Taboos for Qingming? Malaysian Newcomer Zou Yihan Drops New Song on Tomb-Sweeping Day

(Kuala Lumpur, April 3) Emerging Malaysian singer-songwriter Zou Yihan is set to release her debut single “Please Attend My Funeral” on Qingming Festival, marking the beginning of her musical journey with a uniquely “dark yet tender” love song.

The track is written from the perspective of the deceased, exploring themes of death and the continuation of love. Zou explained that releasing the song during Qingming is not meant to challenge tradition, but rather to align with a day of remembrance, conveying the song’s core message: “Some goodbyes are not endings—they are a different form of existence, and love does not simply disappear.” She also hopes to encourage open conversations about death, emphasizing that “birth, aging, illness, and death are all natural parts of life.”

With a striking title that immediately sets the tone, the song unfolds from a perspective where “the beginning is already the end.” Through the eyes of someone who has passed, it gently expresses unspoken words and unfinished farewells. Zou revealed that the inspiration came after witnessing the passing of several musicians around her, prompting her to reflect: “If I were to suddenly leave one day, what would I want to say to the people I love?” This question ultimately became the emotional foundation of the song.

She hopes the piece can carry those “unsaid words,” offering comfort and companionship to those experiencing loss through honesty and warmth.

Zou has been self-learning music composition for nearly seven years, with her journey sparked by encouragement from musician Liu Baolong, who was the first to recognize her vocal tone and inspire her to pursue songwriting. Over time, creating music has evolved into a way for her to process emotions and engage in self-reflection.

The song is co-composed and produced by Malaysian musician Jia Wang, known for his work on Your Name Engraved Herein, which won both Golden Melody and Golden Horse Awards. He described the track as “seemingly dark on the surface, yet deeply romantic—a form of love that expresses farewell with ultimate gentleness.” He was immediately drawn to the concept upon reading the lyrics.

Speaking about Zou, Jia Wang noted that she is someone who may live a somewhat chaotic life, yet feels everything deeply: “When it comes to music, her eyes become incredibly focused.”

Zou Yihan’s debut single “Please Attend My Funeral” will be released on April 5 across major digital streaming platforms.
