Højlund's Stay at Man United in Doubt: Secret Talks with Inter Revealed, Ten Hag May Reunite in Germany
Despite publicly claiming he expects to stay at Manchester United next season, Danish striker Rasmus Højlund is reportedly engaged in private talks with Inter Milan. According to Italian media, the 22-year-old’s representatives have already met with Inter, who prefer a loan deal with a buy option. United, however, are only considering a permanent transfer worth €40–45 million. Former manager Erik ten Hag’s new role at Bayer Leverkusen also adds intrigue, as German clubs reportedly show strong interest in Højlund.
Last weekend, Rasmus Højlund publicly stated his intention to stay at Manchester United. However, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims this is misleading. They report that Højlund is actually open to leaving and has expressed interest in returning to Serie A, with his agent recently meeting Inter Milan officials.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed: “Inter are interested. Let’s see if they can agree terms with United.”
United, according to Corriere dello Sport, are open to selling but only on a permanent basis with a €40–45 million valuation. Inter, on the other hand, hope for a loan with an option to buy, believing United will eventually lower demands due to Højlund’s underwhelming form.
His struggles extend to the national team—he was substituted in the 66th minute of Denmark’s recent match and received a dismal 2/10 rating. Coach Brian Priske defended him, saying tactical issues left Højlund isolated up front.
Despite this, Højlund acknowledged the criticism: “I always expect more from myself. I’ve played 25 matches for the national team and represent one of the biggest clubs in the world. I must do better.”
When asked again about Inter rumors, he deflected: “I don’t know. I try to stay away from that talk. It can be both good and bad.”
Insiders suggest his “loyalty” statements may be tactical, not definitive. United are willing to sell, and Højlund’s camp is exploring multiple options, including Serie A giants Juventus, Napoli, and AC Milan. Premier League analyst Graeme Bailey added that German clubs like RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are seriously interested—with Bayer Leverkusen, now led by Erik ten Hag, also monitoring.
Notably, Højlund’s family lives in Germany, and his twin brothers play there, making the Bundesliga an attractive destination.
