“Public Figures Shouldn’t Reoffend?” Korean Rapper Appeals for Leniency in Drug Case

(Seoul, April 3) South Korean rapper Sik-K (real name Kwon Min-sik) is currently undergoing an appeal in his drug-related case. His defense team pleaded for leniency in court, emphasizing that he voluntarily turned himself in and has remained drug-free, arguing that “his status as a public figure actually makes reoffending less likely.”

The Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 2-1 held the appeal hearing on April 2. Prosecutors argued that the original sentence was too lenient and requested a prison term of three years and six months.

According to the case, Sik-K was accused of using ketamine and ecstasy in October 2023, and later using and possessing marijuana in January 2024. He subsequently surrendered to authorities and was indicted without detention in June. In the first trial, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, along with probation and mandatory drug treatment programs.

During the appeal, the defense argued that his professional status should not be treated as an aggravating factor. His lawyer stated, “Being a public figure serves as a strong social restraint, making it more difficult to reoffend.” They also noted that Sik-K has already faced significant consequences, including halted activities and canceled endorsements.

The defense further highlighted that Sik-K has no prior criminal record beyond this case, has undergone consistent treatment over the past two years, and has maintained sobriety—making the likelihood of reoffending extremely low. His voluntary surrender was also presented as a mitigating factor.

Sik-K rose to fame through Show Me the Money 4 and later established his own label, gaining recognition in the Korean hip-hop scene. However, his return to performing shortly after the initial ruling sparked public debate.

The appellate verdict is expected to be delivered at 10 a.m. on the 30th of this month.
