A major safety incident has struck a well-known rally event in central France. On the morning of July 26, during the "La Fougère Rally" in the Arlanc region of Puy-de-Dôme, a participating race car veered off the track and crashed into the spectator area, resulting in 3 deaths and multiple injuries.
🏁 Race Car Loses Control, Slams into Spectators
According to organizers, the accident occurred mid-race. The car was driven by a 22-year-old female driver, accompanied by a 51-year-old male co-driver, when it suddenly lost control at high speed and entered a restricted viewing zone.
Two brothers, aged 70 and 60, died instantly at the scene. A 44-year-old male spectator was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
🚔 Race Halted, Criminal Investigation Launched
Shortly after the accident, the organizers canceled the event and award ceremony at 11 a.m., and authorities sealed off the entire racing site. A police investigation is underway.
Initial findings suggest that some spectators may have breached restricted zones. The local prosecutor’s office has launched a criminal investigation for involuntary manslaughter (homicide involontaire).
⚠️ Second Fatal Incident in Two Years
This marks the second consecutive year the La Fougère Rally has experienced a deadly incident. In 2024, a track safety official was killed under similar circumstances after being struck by a race car.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over event safety protocols and spectator control measures.
🧾 Ongoing Response
The injured are currently being treated, and the venue remains closed. Organizers have promised a full review of safety procedures and pledged full cooperation with the authorities.
The incident has prompted national discussions in France regarding rally racing risks, public safety, and regulatory oversight.
