Manchester United owner Jim Ratcliffe has set a clear mandate for the summer: generate at least £100 million through player sales. While departures such as Casemiro, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia may not bring transfer fees, their exits will significantly reduce the wage bill.
Several first-team players are also on the potential sale list, including Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, Manuel Ugarte, and Joshua Zirkzee. Højlund’s move to Napoli is reportedly close, with a fee of around €44 million expected.
Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, has a €30 million buy option, though the Spanish side is negotiating a lower fee. United are hoping his performances remain strong to maintain leverage.
If both deals are completed, United could raise around £64 million. However, selling Onana remains complicated, as the club must secure at least £19 million to avoid a financial loss.
Zirkzee prefers to stay and fight for his place, but the club is open to selling him—even at a loss. Transfer expert Ben Jacobs noted that while Zirkzee initially wanted to leave for more playing time, he is now willing to stay unless opportunities remain limited.
Ugarte’s case is even more challenging. Signed for around €60 million, selling him would result in a loss, but United may still offload him to fund a new defensive midfielder. Targets such as Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba, and Alex Scott are all expected to cost £50 million or more.
Club legend Rio Ferdinand offered a pragmatic approach, suggesting United should focus on signing four key players: “Two midfielders—one starter and one young talent—plus a striker and a full-back.”
He added: “People say United need 10 signings, but I don’t think a full rebuild is necessary. Four smart additions are tough but achievable.” Ferdinand also emphasized a preference for domestic players, highlighting Anderson as an ideal fit due to his energy, physicality, and all-around midfield qualities.
