In Round 4 of the 2026 Chinese Super League, Shanghai Port hosted Yunnan Yukun in a match dominated by VAR decisions, with three goals ruled out.
In the 14th minute, after a header from Yang Xi, Liu Zhurun missed the initial contact, and Leonardo finished from close range. However, VAR intervened, and after a lengthy review, the goal was disallowed for offside.
In first-half stoppage time, Kuai Jiwen scored on a one-on-one chance, but VAR once again ruled it out due to offside.
Early in the second half, Oscar appeared to score from close range during a counterattack. However, the referee disallowed the goal immediately. Replays confirmed that Oscar used his hand to push the ball into the net.
The incident drew comparisons to Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God,” but in the VAR era, such actions are quickly detected. Yunnan’s coach Jordi Vinyals initially seemed confused, but the replay left no doubt.
The match was heavily influenced by VAR, adding drama and controversy throughout.
