Reports: “Young and Dangerous” actor Li Daoyu passes away at 58—lived alone, suffered prior fall and declining health

(Hong Kong, April 4) News has emerged that Hong Kong actor Lee To-yu has passed away at the age of 58. Best known for his role as “Brother Yiu” (Chan Yiu) in the Young and Dangerous franchise, he leaves behind a memorable legacy—though his later years were marked by declining health following a serious fall.

According to friends, Lee suffered a major accident several years ago after returning home alone. He fell and sustained a severe head injury, remaining in a coma for six days. Although he survived, the brain trauma left lasting complications that gradually worsened over time.

Those who visited him in hospital described a stark contrast from his on-screen persona. The injury reportedly caused partial skull damage, and prolonged illness left him frail and visibly weakened. Unmarried and without children, he spent much of his later years in hospital care, supported mainly by close friends. No official statement has yet been released by his family.

Lee began his career in the 1980s after training with TVB, appearing in numerous productions such as The Bund and Golden Bowl. He was especially known for portraying gangster roles, with his breakout performance as the calm and strategic “advisor” Chan Yiu in Young and Dangerous cementing his place in Hong Kong cinema.

He also collaborated multiple times with director Wong Jing, including a cameo in My Wife Is a Gambling Saint. After gradually stepping away from acting in the 2000s to pursue business in mainland China, he made a brief return in 2023 with a guest role in the TVB drama Dancing City, which became his final screen appearance.

From a composed strategist on screen to a solitary figure battling illness in later life, Lee’s journey is deeply poignant—a reminder of life’s fragility and the value of health and companionship.
