Huang Xiaoming apologizes, confirms he has accepted traffic penalties after posting photo of 9-year-old cycling sparked debate

On April 5, Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming issued a public apology after facing criticism for taking his 9-year-old son cycling on public roads.

He explained that the outing was meant to enjoy the holiday and spend time outdoors, but he later realized—after being reminded by netizens—that he had overlooked a key regulation: children under 12 are not allowed to ride bicycles on public roads under Chinese traffic law.

“I deeply regret this oversight,” Huang said, adding that as a parent, he should have set a better example by prioritizing safety and compliance with the law.

He also used the opportunity to remind other parents: “Just because a child knows how to ride doesn’t mean they are allowed on the road. Following the rules is the best protection.”

Huang confirmed that he has already contacted traffic authorities and will formally accept penalties and education after the holiday period.

The controversy began when he posted photos on April 4 showing a warm father-son cycling moment. While initially praised, the comment section quickly turned into a legal discussion, with many pointing out the age restriction. The post has since been deleted.

Current regulations in China state:

• Under 12: not allowed to ride bicycles on roads
• Under 16: not allowed to ride electric bicycles
• Under 18: not allowed to operate motorcycles

Authorities emphasize that minors lack full judgment and reaction capabilities, making early road exposure potentially dangerous.
